| Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. The Wolff House is a charming example of French Norman architecture, a period-revival style that enjoyed minor popularity in the 1920s. Loosely patterned on picturesque farmhouses in the countryside of Normandy, the style combines formidable massing with a steeply pitched hipped roof, hipped dormers, and often, as in this 1925 example, a round tower with a conical roof. Heimer of Milwaukee designed the brick house with a limestone belt course dividing the two stories. Stepped back behind the tower is a low front-facing gable; false half-timbering and French windows opening onto a small balcony give this gable a medieval appearance. The elliptically arched entry is sheltered by a buttressed and gabled porch with decorative spindle trusses in the gable end. |
