It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Builder was Frank Greve. RESTORED 1981-1982. HOME OF FOUNDER OF JEFFERSON MEAT CO. The house was constructed in 1893 for Emil Stoppenbach. The builder was Frank Greve of Watertown. Stoppenbach, along with his father Charles and two brothers Joe and Frank, organized the C. Stoppenbach & Sons Packing Plant in Jefferson in 1884. Shortly after the company's founding, Charles Stoppenbach died, but the three sons continued to operate the company until they sold it in 1931. Other known activities of Emil Stoppenbach include a term as the Jefferson mayor between 1890 and 1891 and also director of the Jefferson County Bank. He died in 1947. The house was then purchased by John Zeidler who converted it into an apartment home. In 1981, the house was professionally renovated and restored as a single family home. |
