| Additional Information: | 2019 -- HRL -- Influenced by the Queen Anne architectural style is this two-story, side gable, frame house sheathed with narrow, vinyl siding. It is situated on the northside of the road and faces south. The house’s most prominent feature is its central wall dormer in the south façade that is off-set slightly to the right (east) with scrollwork in the gable peak. To the left (west) of that dominant wall dormer is a much smaller wall dormer with scrollwork, two of which are also found on the east side of the two story wing projecting to the north. All windows on the house, with two exceptions, are double-hung sashes with wooden surrounds and either modestly pedimented or straight heads. Centered on the first floor of the south façade’s primary wall dormer is an enclosed porch with a gabled roof. The porch claims four, double-hung sashes in its south wall, a similar window on its right (east) side and a door on its left (west) wall. To the left (west) of the porch is one set of paired sashes sheltered by a pent roof while a small, single, horizontally placed window is to the right (east) of the porch. The east side of the house (which includes the two story wing projecting to the north) has another, generally centered entrance sheltered by a small gabled roof, to the left (south) of which is a single pair of sashes, to the further left of which is a single window. To the right (north) of the door way is a smaller unit of paired sashes, to the far right of which is a small, squared window. A small porch projects from the endwall of the projection to the north. Adjacent to the house to the north northeast is a large, gambrel roof barn that rises from a concrete foundation and is sheathed with vertical board (AHI #239021). Situated in its south exposure are two large, sliding doors that generally rise to the height of the wall. That entrance is flanked by numerous four-over-four light windows. Perpendicular to the barn, and directly east of the house is a machine shed with at least five garage doors. This structure has a gabled roof and is sheathed with board-and-batten siding (AHI# 239022). Unlike the Jones family farm (AHI# 239019), this complex is one of those that, for whatever reason, had a series of unrelated owners. The farm was owned in 1889 by L.W. Cross. Thirteen years later, it appears that a J. W. Cross held the farm. Thereafter it was held by F. Fishbeck, Ariens, & Schubert, a Mrs. P. Mader and, in 1951, Martin Sippel, a couple of whom seem to have lived in the area before acquiring the farm. A school was located in the very southeast corner of the quarter section, thus did the farm's size never exceed 99.5 acres. By 1902 it appears that perhaps up to 10 acres had been reduced to 90 acres. Those holding the farm were generally of German descent. ALSO ON THE PROPERTY: AHI #239021 & AHI #239022 |
