It has a rectangular plan and rests on a fieldstone foundation. The steeply pitched front gable roof is covered with asphalt shingles and features flared eaves, gable dormers on both side (north and south) elevations, and two interior brick chimneys. Other roof details include a prominent arched barge board with brackets in the front gable and dormer gables. The first story is clad in red brick a wood water table separates it from the stucco-covered second story. A low-pitched side gable enclosed porch spans the length of the front facade and features simple wood-framed screens and square supports with a stone knee wall. A two-story bay is located on the side (south) elevation and a one story bay is located on the other side (north) elevation. Windows are a combination of one-over-one double-hung sash, diamond-patterned double-hung sash, and single-pane fixed sash. Reed was an early Lake Mills resident, merchant, and banker. The property was sold to William Peterson, Executive Secretary for the Wisconsin Chamber of Commerce, in 1947. The property was purchased by Robert Shorey, principal and insurance salesman, in 1952. At some point the house was converted into a duplex." -"CTH A: Madison St to Grant St", WisDOT#3638-00-72/73, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc., (2016). |
