BAYS ON FRONT AND SIDE. 2016 - APPEARANCE UNCHANGED. 2016- "This three-story house was constructed by Frank Fargo in 1877 in the Second Empire style. IN 1896, a three-story tower with conical roof and two-story wraparound porch were added to the north corner of the front facade. The porch has since been removed. It has a rectangular plan, is of cream brick masonry construction, and rests on a cut stone foundation. Characteristic of the Second Empire style, the house has a mansard roof with arched dormer windows on a steep lower slope, molded cornices supported by decorative brackets, and dentils. Other roof details include four interior brick chimneys. The walls are in cream brick and the house features three bay windows, one on the front (west) facade and one on each side (north and south) elevation. The main entrance is a single fixed pane and wood panel door with a hip awning. Windows are a combination of single-pane, fixed sash; single-pane, fixed sash with leaded headers; leaded glass-over-one, double-hung sash; one-over-one, double-hung sash; and fixed oval windows. Windows have simple stone sills and segmental, flat arch or hood details. Frank Fargo established a dairy equipment business around 1870. By the turn of the twentieth century the Fargo Dairy Supply Company (Fargo Dairy) was one of the largest dairy suppliers in the world and employed 86 Lake Mills residents. The Fargos sold the business to the Creamery Package Company in 1898 but continued to oversee local operations. According to research this house was one of the first in Lake Mills to use coal heating. The Ladies of Good Council Organization acquired the property in 1923 to serve as a summer home. It was purchased seven years later by H. Schuler and converted into the Elm Manor Clothing Shop in 1934. Bruno Rackow purchased the property in 1940 and converted it into apartments." -"CTH A: Madison St to Grant St", WisDOT#3638-00-72/73, Prepared by Mead & Hunt, Inc., (2016). |
