Additional Information: | This symmetrical design features a central facade tower with the wide nave directly behind. Windows lighting the sanctuary are paired abd capped by round arched hood moldings. Four pairs of windows are arranged along each side of the nave. The building is constructed of brick with the expansive wall surfaces contributing to a heavy, massive feeling. This church is similar in plan (but entirely different in detail) to the original Zion Lutheran Church at 1002 N. Sawyer St. (OS 4/32). This is the only church from this period which draws on Romanesque rather than Gothic sources. Unfortunately the alteration of the tower cap mars the design, apparently it terminated in a crenellated section at some point. The original congregation was organized in 1867 to serve the English-speaking Methodist population on the south side. The building was begun in 1868 but was not completed until 1872 due to financial difficulties. In 1918 this church merged with two others to form the Tenth Ave. M.E. Church and sold the building. |
