Additional Information: | ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT: This residence is significant as an example of the local interpretation of the Greek Revival style. The majority of the houses in Oshkosh which were designed within the parameters of this style were of frame construction. This house is particularly interesting as an example of brick construction. The building is essentially a T in plan with the main block rising two full stories. At right angles to this is a one story wing with a low gable dormer breaking the eave line. A porch extends across the wing. A wide frame entablature and returning eaves complete the composition. HISTORICAL STATEMENT: Research through available documentary and mapping sources has yieldied no clue as to the owner or date of this house. The land was originally claimed by Robert Grignon and William Powell in 1836. In 1889 it was owned by the partnership of Moses Hooper and a lumberman from Neenah named Henry Sherry, no doubt for investment puposes. In 1895 the property was sub-divided for sale and this lot was notibly larger than the others indicating the presence of the older farmhouse. |
