Additional Information: | A very restrained composition unified by horizontal string courses and cornice. Built in 1939 for the City of Oshkosh, this fire station was built under a WPA grant for the city. The architect was J.F. Dreger. The brick facade and stonework are salvaged materials from the former Oshkosh Post Office that was once on the corner of Washington and Jefferson streets. The brick structure or brick filler is comprised of material salvaged from the former Winnebago County Courthouse located between Ceape and Otter streets in Oshkosh. Both buildings were acquired by the City of Oshkosh in 1939 and razed as part of a WPA project to put men to work. Materials were salvaged from both buildings to be used in other construction projects--including the Ohio Street fire station #6. Resurveyed in 2004; overhead doors replaced; 2nd story window openings filled in. 2004: The No. 6 Fire Station was the sixth fire station to be established in the city of Oshkosh. |
