Additional Information: | This is one of a row of three Greek Revival designs. The buildings are located on large lots on the main street of old Algoma. This structure is the least altered of the three, but does have a front porch addition out of character with the overall design. Pedimented gable. This property was sold to Philetus Sawyer by Coles Bashford in 1854. Two years later, Sawyer sold it to a man by the name of Chandler. This was the only property Sawyer owned in Algoma other than the sawmill. It is possible that this home is the original Sawyer home, however, there is no information on the age of the house. Its architectural configuration suggests it could date from the 1850's but no records are available which confirm that. Sawyer moved to his splendid new mansion across the river in 1857, several months after he sold the property. If this home should prove to have belonged to Sawyer, it could have significant historical merit. |
