| Additional Information: | Two of the occupants of this house included Walter Volkman, who lived here in 1930, and Israel Olson, who lived here in 1936. Initial research indicates that none of the occupants of this house are historically significant. Built in the 1920s, the Walter Volkman house is characterized by wide overhanging eaves with flattened gable roof edges, window groups featuring leaded glass casement windows and a full-length partially enclosed porch with massive, square brick supports and white tile accents. A sidelighted door and gabled south side sunporch are additional features of this Prairie School influenced house. The Walter Volkman house is a vernacular example of the Prairie School house. One of only three houses in Watertown showing definite early modern Prairie School influence, the Fischer house displays only the basic features if the style including the horizontal emphasis, the geometric patterned, leaded glass window band and one story porches with massive square brick supports, identifying it as a vernacular interpretation of the Prairie School. The other examples of the Prairie School influence in Watertown are the house at 606 S. 9th St. (37-26) and the bungalow at 311 N. Montgomery (23-36). |
