Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the State Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. - "George Allen Farmhouse." Might be demolished as of 1980. Merrick T. Allen - "Spring Hill Farm" (1874-1925). Son, George W. Allen inherited property ran farm as "Spring Hill Trout Farm and Wildlife Refuge" (1925-1935). In 1935, foreclosure, 247 acres reverted to the state. During the 1920's, George cleared swamps, built dams. In 1935, Allen's fish farm yielded 1.5 million fish. Both George and Walter Allen were serious students of trout propagation. Walter was Superintendent of Fisheries for the state of Montana, George taught trout propagation techniques at North Dakota Agricultural college, Fargo, N.D., and also holds patents, related to trout propagation.
Bibliographic References:(A) Picture Post, Friday, June 18th, 1976. (B) Letter dated July 17th, 1980 indicates that building was in the process of being torn down, but this is hearsay. (C) Letter to George Allen May 2, 1977 from DNR tells of plans to removed present park office (Allen Farmhouse).
