Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION This house is a one and one-half story side gable stone house. It has a steeply-pitched gable roof. The walls are constructed out of coursed limestone rubble. There are smooth limestone quions at the corners and smooth segemental stone arvhes over the single-pane double-hung sashes. The entry porch covering the central entrance has been enclosed. Also on the property is a gable-roofed barn with an addition that has been a gothic arch. Both the original barn and the additional have board siding. The old barn has large sliding doors, a fieldstone foundation and a number of small window openings. The addition has a concrete foundation. A tall concrete silo sits at one end of the barn. There are also some sheds on the property. ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE Mequon has a number of stone houses, some constructed of limestone and some of fieldstone. This well-proportioned house showsevidence of a high quality of workmanship and materials. The only major modification is the enclosed porch, but even that has an early twentieth century appearance to it that is attractive, if not totally compatible with the old house. Because of its fine construction and appearance, this house is significancant for architecture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND This property was owned by Charles Schoessow between 1867 and 1892 and by Bern. Schoessow between 1924 and 1954. |
