Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION This property has three buildings. The oldest is a log cabin built around 1850. It has a low-pitched gable roof, hand hewn timbers and crudely dovetailed corners. The chinking between the logs has mostly fallen out. Openings are crudely framed with logs. The main house is a two-story gabled ell house with a steeply-pitched gable roof, clapboard siding, and a Queen Qnne style projecting gable section. The projecting has decorative wood shingles and cutaway corners. Windows are largely two-over-two light double-hung sashes with cornice lintels. The ell porch is partially enclosed and has a flat roof and turned post. The barn on the property is a large gambrel-roofed barn with board siding, large sliding door, a fieldstone foundation, and small openings. It has a forebay that hangs over the foundation. A concrete silo sits at one end of the barn. ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE The main house has some architectural interest as an example of a gable ell house. While the building is deteriorating, the logs are still in good condition and all the original features fo the house are still extant. This house is especially important because it is an example of a small pioneer house and probably represents the earliest building that took place in the city of Mequon. It deterorating condition makes it threatened and efforts to preserve it are stongly suggested. Its excellent condition and high level of integrity adds to its architectural significance. HISTORICAL BACKGOURND This property was owned by William Sachse between c.1850 and c.1900. It was then owned by Carl Sashse between 1915 and 1960. [a.d] |
