NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Builder was Hans Knudson. The Matt Jensen house is a two and one-half story Queen Anne style building with a complex intersecting gable roof and three-story corner square tower with a complex pent roof. The projecting gables of the house are decorated with curved bargeboard and cross pieces and there is applied stickwork throughout the clapboard wall surfaces. Openings are irregular, but many are single light sashes. A rectangular bay projects from the north elevation, and a large bay projects from the east elevation. This bay features a large window decorated with small panes of colored glass. Both bays have wood shingled overhangs. The upper openings in the tower and on the projecting gables are decorated with pointed arch moldings in a cut-out pattern. The main entrance is covered with a curved veranda with a flat roof, turned posts, and a lattice-work apron. A side porch is enclosed and appears to have been remodeled. A fine carriage house is at the rear of the property. The Jensen house is an outstanding example of the Queen Anne style. The irregular plan and elaborate wood details of the house are typical of the style, as is the veranda and corner tower. The building has a high degree of integrity with most of its architectural details. It is one of the finest historic houses in the city. Brown was the public library director.
