NOTES
Additional Information:The old county jail building is a two-story Italianate style house constructed of brick that has been painted. The building has a low-pitched hip roof with wide eaves and a wide wooden frieze. Openings are largely single-light sashes. An early twentieth century porch covers the front entrance. It has a hip roof and round columns.

The old county jail was built in 1867 and was used as a jail until around the turn of the twentieth century, when a new jail was built next to the courthuose. In 1905, the local paper reported that this house was being remodeled, presumably into a residence. It is possible that this building also housed the county sheriff along with jail facilities, as was common during this era.

Because the old county courthouse has been demolished, this is also the only historic building related to county government extant in the city. Jails were one of the most important facilities of county government during the nineteenth century and were typically part residential and part jail. This house is typical of how a jail of this era would have looked. Although it was remodeled in the early twentieth century into a residence, it has much of its historic appearance extant today.
