Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION This one and one-half story fieldstone house has a side gable form with a one story rear wing. The fieldstone rubble used for this house is laid up in courses that are defined by motar joints. Ther are polished limestone quions at the corners. The roof is a low-pitched intersecting gable roof and there are small gable-roofed dormers projecting from it. Windows are six-over-six light double-hung sashes topped with limestone arches and keystones, The windows have stone sills. The main entrance is decorated with sidelights, a transom and a stone arch that matches those over the windows. Also on the property is a small building that appears to be an earlier house. The barn has a gable roof, board siding, small window openings, and a fieldstone foundation. ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE Mequon has a number of fieldstone houses and outbuildings and they all exhibit high level of workmanship and materials. This house is no exception. Of particular note are the fine original Greek Revival style windows with the fine stone arches, as well as the stone quions. Th eoriginal entrance, also decorated in the Greek Revival style, with the stone arch is notable. The building overall has teh symmetry and fine sense of proportion that buildings of the Greek Revival usually show. The house also has a high level of preservation. The barn on the property is also a good example of an early barn type in Mequon. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The owner of this property between 1867 and 1892 was J.H. Thiestfeldt. [a] |
