| Additional Information: | This potato warehouse is one and one-half stories in height and has a front gable form. It has a gable roof and walls covered with drop or shiplap wooden siding. The openings are covered with crude wooden doors constructed of vertical wood. The building sits on a stone foundation. These utilitarian, simple buildings were erected during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, primarily along rail lines in the eastern part of the city. They served the large potato trade that dominated the community's economic life at this time. Often with heavily insulated walls and ceilings, the warehouses had few amenities. Potato warehouses are historically significant in the economic history of Waupaca because the city was the center of the nation's potato trade at the turn of the twentieth century. Few warehouses have survived demolition, fire, or remodeling as intact historic buildings. This warehouse, along with its neighbor, are the best examples of extant potato warehouses in the city, an important historic resource in the community. |
