Additional Information: | The Gazette Building consists of a facade of pressed brick, and side elevations of common brick resting on a high stone foundtion. Window openings on the side elevation are segmetally arched and contain 9/9 sash. The facade of the building is accented by stone insets as well as soldier courses of brick. A large, three part window dominates the facade, this window is centered on the facade and rises from a stone lintel. The facade is a rectilinear simple design, accented by tapestry brick and stone. The design of the facade is typical of the early twentieth century buildings erected in Stevens Point. (See Shafton Block, 1019 Main St., 2/19). This building was originally constructed around 1917 as the ofice and printing plant of the Portage County Gazette. In 1919 the Gazette and the Stevens Point Journal merged forming the Journal Printing Co. This building was then used by the new company and is still owned by it although much newer facilities are now at 1124 and 1200 Third St. The building was not the original house of either paper. THIS BUILDING WAS DEMOLISHED SOMETIME BETWEEN 1982 AND 2011. |
