Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION The caretaker's house is a one and one-half story building with a low-pitched gable roof. It is covered wtih asbestos siding. The windows are two-over-two pane double hung sashes. Also on the property are two gambrel roof barns with board siding, decorative sawtooth boards, small window openings, and a large sliding doors. A small concrete milkhouse sits in front of the smaller barn. 2017: Second story window indow in north-facing gable has been replaced with a single-paned window ARCHITECTURE/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE The barns and milkhouse on the property have some architectural interest as example of agricultural outbuildings. Further investigation may reveal a building that is significant as an example of a log house in Mequon. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND George Virmond owned this property until 1939. [a] After his death, the land was donated to Ozaukee County in 1944 to be converted into lakeshore park. It still remains a park today and the farm buildings are on the site and are used for park purposes. 2017: Possible use as a hobby farm during early 20th century HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE Further investigation into deeds may reveal a historically significant person associated with the log house in the park. |
