NOTES
Additional Information:Madison Historic Landmark: 5/20/1974. A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. MAP CODE IS 070914417013. Designed in a late nineteenth century eclectic manner by the architectural firm of J. O. Gordon and F. W. Paunack, this house was owned by Halle Steensland, Madison banker, philanthropist, and vice consul to Norway and Sweden. Constructed in 1897 the dwelling incorporates forms from many styles: the Romanesque, the Queen Anne, the Aesthetic, and the Classical among them. The house was individually listed before it was moved within the NRHD. The owner did not request to relocate the property resulting in delisting the individual status; however, since it was moved within the HD, it remains a contributor. Steensland, a Norwegian immigrant, came to Madison in 1855 at a time when the City was growing at a tremendous rate, and he contributed considerably to that growth.
