Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION A very simple example of a hay barn, this structure is built on a low fieldstone foundation, no more than 12" of which is visible above the ground level. The foundation is in poorer condition than thatof thw western barn; mortar is crumbling and stones are missing. The proportion of stones to mortar appears to hae been greater than in the other barn. A few of the vertical boards are split and broken. The only openings are rolling doors on the westernside of the barn. A single-story shed-roofed bay protrudes from the northern, short side of the barn. The foundation of this bay is heavily mortared, suggesting that this bay is added at a later date. Asphalt sheet roofing covers the bay while asphalt shingle are used on the main gable roof. The barn has no ordiment ot fenestration. A large tree grows from beneath the foundation of the bay. ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE This barn is very similar in design asn appearance to its partner on the west side of the farm complex. It makes up the eastern side of a four-sided Vierkanthof farm layout often in the Ozaukee Pomerianian farmers in the Ozaukee county area. This is only the four-sided farm layout found to be intact in this survey. Unfortuantly a new a garage (ca. 1980) has been constructed in the center of the square by the historical structures. The other barns in the complex has been dated at 1875 by tax assessor's records. This one, although undated, appears to be slightly older. |
