Additional Information: | Sanborn-Perris maps show that this altered two-story brick Commercial Vernacular building was built between 1900 and 1905, at which time it housed a blacksmith shop. Other sources show that in 1908 the building housed the blacksmith shop of A. Perkins and it is reasonable to suppose that the building was built for him. 1995- "A. Perkins Blacksmith Shop (now Krause Monument Co.), VE25/17. Sanborn maps show that this rectilinear plan two-story Commercial Vernacular form building was built between 1900 and 1905, at which time it housed a blacksmith shop. Other sources show that in 1908 the building housed A. Perkins, who operated a blacksmith shop there, and the building continued to be used as a blacksmith shop until at least 1933. The walls of the building are clad in brick, although the first story of the west-facing main facade and the first story of the exposed north-facing side elevation are now completely covered with a veneer composed of modern vertical wooden boards. The original brick second story of these elevations is still visible, however, and it extends up to a stepped parapet wall on the side elevations and to the simple corbelled brick cornice that crowns the main facade. Nothing now remains of the main facade's original storefront, which has been replaced by a modern version, and it is believed that the left-hand of the two flat-arched window openings in the second story above is also not original. Because of the substantial changes that have been made to this building it is highly unlikely that it would be individually eligible for inclusion on the NRHP." - "USH 14 Transportation Study ", WisDOT ID #1646-07-00, Prepared by Timothy F Heggland (1995). |
