Additional Information: | Sanborn-Perris maps show that this one-story rectilinear plan Astylistic Utilitarian/Gabled Ell form building was built in two phases. The south portion was built between 1900 and 1905 as a freight depot for the La Crosse & Southeastern Railroad, the north portion was built as an extension between 1905 and 1911. Both portions were originally clad in clapboards, but much of the main fcade is now clad in vertical metal siding. The building is presently used for storage. 1995- "La Crosse and Southeastern Railroad Freight Depot, VE26/4. Sanborn maps show that this one-story rectilinear plan Astylistic Utilitarian/ Gable ell form building was actually built in two phases. The south portion has a simple metal-covered gable roof whose ridge runs east-west and it was built between 1900 and 1905 as a freight depot for the La Crosse and Southeastern Railroad. The larger north portion has a simple asphalt shingle-covered gable roof whose ridge runs north-south and it was built as an extension between 1905 and 1911. Both portions were originally clad in clapboards and much of this is still in place, but the west-facing (Center Avenue) main facade of the north portion has now been clad in vertical metal siding. Despite the building's largely intact state, its very simple utilitarian design and the loss of the other railroad-related buildings in the immediate vicinity (i.e. the passenger station that was once around the corner on East Decker Street), makes it unlikely that it is individually eligible for listing in the NRHP." - "USH 14 Transportation Study ", WisDOT ID #1646-07-00, Prepared by Timothy F Heggland (1995). |
