Additional Information: | Sanborn-Perris maps show that this building was actually built prior to 1892 and early photos show that it was originally a fine Italianate style commercial building. Sanborn maps also show that this building was a drugstore from 1892 until 1933 (it housed the A. J. Johnson drugstore in 1908). 1995- "Sanborn maps show that this now greatly altered two-story Twentieth Century Commercial Style building was built prior to 1892 and historic photos show that it was originally a good representative example ot an ltalianate style commercial building. The building is rectilinear in plan, it measures 75-feet-deep x 25-feet-wide, and its main facade faces east onto Main Street and is clad in brick although not the original brick. Historic photos show this facade originally had a full-width first story storefront, that its second story featured three evenly distributed segmental-arched window openings with one-over-one light double hung windows, and that it was crowned by a decorative overhanging bracketed cornice. By 1940, historic photos show that the first story had been altered and the cornice removed, but the second story was still intact as of that date. Some time after that date, however, the middle second story window opening was blocked up and the flanking openings shortened and reduced in size, and smaller modern windows installed. Today, the only part of the original fabric of this facade that remains is the outline of the original storefront opening and as a result, this building is believed to be too altered to be a contributing resource in the district. Sanborn maps show that this building contained a drugstore from 1892 until 1933 (it housed the A. J. Johnson Drug Store in 1908). Today this building houses the Second Time Around Resale store." - "USH 14 Transportation Study ", WisDOT ID #1646-07-00, Prepared by Timothy F Heggland (1995). |
