Additional Information: | Photo code: OUT:FRV 3/10-12. OAHP INVENTORY (07/05/1981): The Greenwood Products Co. had been operating a pickle factory on this site for several years prior to 1930. In 1930 the Hamilton & Sons Canning Co. of New London purchased the factory and launched a major construction program. The new facilities, constructed of concrete block, consisted of a boilder room, a machine shop, shipping and canning rooms and a 40,000 sq. ft. tank room. In 1933 the Hamilton plant was purchased by the Fremont Kraut Co. of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1934 Fremont moved their offices to Shiocton and became known as the Shiocton Kraut Co. In the same year the canning room was completely rebuilt. In 1940 the cutting room was enlarged and in 1944 the tank room was expanded. From the 1930's to the present the plant has produced sauerkraut exclusively. Among the buildings currently on site two remain in a fairly good unaltered state. Hamilton's original tank room (3/10 & 3/12) measures 40 x 98 ft. Constructed of concrete block it has a booomtown facade with a monitor roof and projecting pilasters. The current office building also dates to the Hamilton expansion. Demolished prior to 2011. |
