Additional Information: | Length of dam is 475 feet, height 48 feet. Built into bed of granite at same time as canal (separate record). However, at the time of the great October 1911 storm, the dam was not strong enough to hold back the huge wave that swept over it. As a result, much of the commercial district of BRF several miles to the southwest was washed away. The dam was rebuilt a year later and was considerably reinforced to prevent any future floods. Hatfield Dam Gates - long concrete structure which houses 10 steel gates that are periodically raised and lowered to control the water level of Lake Arbutus. This lake was created at the time the dam was built. |
