NOTES
Additional Information:Wide roof overhang with block modillions; segmental arched windows with contrasting brick surrounds and two over two lights; stone quoins, open full-length porch with block modillion under overhang and carved posts; rear wood porch. The John Moffat ouse was constructed in 1870. John Moffat, at one time was part of the firm Moffat and Cargill. In 1875, John Moffat and D.N. Cargill were packers and dealers in pork, beef, lard, tallow, hams, shoulders, wool, hops, and other items. In 1875 this firm was located in a new brick building on Water Street. Little more is known about the individual, therefore the house is currently historically insignificant under criterion B. John Moffat lived in this house from the year of construction until circa 1904. This brick building exhibits the classic characteristics of the Italianate style including the rectangular shape, wide eaves with block modillion ornament, tall thin windows, a low pitched roof, open porches and contrasting stone quoins and window ornament. Exceptionally well-preserved. The John Moffat House is significant under Criterion C as an example of the Italianate style. The Moffat House is one of three exceptional representatives of the Italianate styled house in the city. The other two significant examples of the Italianate style are the Woy House ar 200 Pine Street (MO23/7) and the Davidson House at 317 N. Srping St. (MO21/15).
