Additional Information: | Enclosed entrance porch on long side of house with rectangular windows topped by overlights; small window cornices over one over one windows. This house was built circa 1897 to 1900. B.H. Sheffer, who is associated with the dwelling was the proprietor and owner of the Wisconsin House, a small hotel in the community (also known as the Briggson Hotel) at 417 South Water Street. He and his wife Lucy resided at this North Street address from its construction date to as late as 1916. Because little historical data is currently associated with the dwelling, its role in the development of Sparta remains unclear. It is therefore, currently historically insignificant under criterion B. Generally well-preserved, this side gabled house form has a two sided enclosed porch and a rear enclosed porch. This otherwise well preserved house does not meet the criteria of the NRHP for architectural significance because other more substantial examples of the side gabled vernacular form exist in the city. |
