NOTES
Additional Information:The Sparta Junior-Senior High School was constructed in 1922 and completed and dedicated on January 1, 1924. The new high school replaced Sparta former high school located on that site, which had served the community since 1896. On December 21, 1921, at a school meeting the new building was voted on and approved. While the school was under construction, barracks from Camp McCoy were brought to house the students. There have been no modifications to the building, but in 1936, bleachers and lights were added to the field behind the school.

The Sparta High School exhibits plain brick surfaces ornamented with Gothci Revival architectural details. This building is characterized mainly by projecting entrance bays or pavilions designed to suggest Gothic styled towers ornamented with arched entrances.

The Sparta High School was constructed during the year 1922-1923 by local contractors, the Naset Brothers for a contract price of $190,200. This school was designed by regional important architects Parkinson and Dockendorff from La Crosse, WI. It was built when the earlier school on the same block in 1895 did not provide enough space for the growing school population.

The Sparta High School and the Depot School Primary School at 604 Walrath St. (MP 32/7) are the only well-preserved, extant Sparta Public School buildings known to remain in the city.
