Additional Information: | Previously surveyed in 1986. This building was constructed around 1930 for an automobile repair garage for Ben Strauss. This building has some historical interest as an early building constructed expressly as an automobile garage. It is not individually historically significant, but does contribute to the overall development of commerce in the Main Street Commercial Historic District. Built c. 1930 for Ben Strauss as car garage and service center, this dark red brick one-story building has triangular pediment rising above the roof line. White concrete coping and raised brick rectangular panels with white tile accents decorate the upper facade. A round arched half window is located in the center of the facade. Gable roofed skylights are evident on the roof. The storefront of the garage has been altered and the garage's show windows have been filled in. The Strauss Garage is a commercial vernacular building influenced by the 20th century contemporary-early modern style characterized mainly by decorative brick and tile patterns inset in the flat brick surfaces. Although this building is not architecturally significant, the Strauss building contributes to the historic character of the Main Street District. |
