Additional Information: | A brick two-story rectangular-shaped school structure on an elevated basement that has a pedimented central bay. A round arched window and a semi-circular arched window over the double-doored entrance accents the symmetrically designed front facade. A cupola tops the hipped roof and gable structure. The architectural significance of this structure lies in its importance as a community building that has played a central part in the lives of many of its citizens. St. Matthew's School is associated with the development of parochial education in Shullsburg. Shullsburg was heavily populated with Irish Catholics in the 1830's and 1840's. The church was established early in the 1840's by Father Samuel Mazzuchelli. During the 19th century, the church opened a parochial school two different times. The second one ended in 1895. In 1917-18, the new school building was built, which opened in 1919. The school was staffed by the Sisters of Mercy from Janesville, In 1956, several classrooms, a gymnasium, kitchen, library and an office were added. The school closed in 1967. The buildings were rented to the public schools except this building, which is the St. Vincent de Paul Store. |
