Additional Information: | A 'site file' titled "Memorial Park Historic District" exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Corbelled window sills; plain rectangular windows; two story front entrance porch with altered supports in angle of house. This was the home of John Schmepf, of the Schempf Brothers department store, between c. 1885 and c. 1893. It was the home of the manager of the Wisconsin Gas and Electric Company, Roscoe Conklin, between c. 1924 and c. 1936. This house has some historical interest as the short-term home of John Schempf, a prominent merchant and Roscoe Conklin, a utilities official. john Schempf is a significant person in retail commerce, but because he lived here briefly, this house is not individually significant for its association with him. Conklin's career is not individually historically significant. Therfore, this house does not meet the criteria for individual eligibility, but does contribute to the overall historical significance of the proposed historic district. This building does not meet the criteria of the NRHP for architectural significance because of a lack of integrity. However, this building has sufficient architectural character to contribute to the proposed historic district. |
