It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Smith (1873-1949) lived here from 1911-1947. Was a professor of French at the University of Wisconsin from 1899-1943. Was an emeritus professor from 1944-1949. Was the organizer of French House in 1918 for French students at the University of Wisconsin. Was a lecturer at the Universite de Sorbonne in Paris from 1921-1922 and again from 1929-1930. Was the Director of the American University in Paris and was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in 1930. Between 1973 and 2010, the house belonged to Louise and David Trubek, both graduates of Yale Law School and professors at the UW Law School. In 1957, Louise was a plaintiff in a case that went to the Supreme Court and established a right to contraception across the United States. She continued to work as a public interest lawyer throughout her career. David was Voss-Bascom Professor of Law and Dean of International Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Senior Research Fellow at the Harvard Law School. He received the Kalven Prize from the Law and Society Association and in 2002 was appointed Chevalier des Palmes Academiques by the French Government in recognition of his work on globalization. |
