Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION This two-story gabled ell house has a very low-pitched gable roof and is covered with aluminum siding. Windows are small double-hung sashes decorated with shutters. Also on the property are tow barns with gable roofs, board siding, fieldstone foundation and small window openings. One of the barns has pointed boards as a decoration at the gable ends. At the corner of the one of the barns is a fieldstone construction silo with conical roof covered with wood shingles. ARCHITECTURAL/ENIGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE The barns have some architectural interest as good examples of gable roof barns. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND This property was owned by Friedricj Gierach between at least 1857 and until 1876. (Georg) Friedrich Gierach was the son of Christian and Rosina Gierach. The Gierachs came to this countyr form northern Germany and joined the western Mequon Freistadt community. Theis German community consisted primarily of nothern Germany immimgrants who came to Wisconsin for religious freedom. It is reported the Friedrich, who was born in 1815 in Germany, purchased his Mequon land in 1861, but tax rolls indicate that he owned it as early as 1857. In any event, Friedrich Gierach and his wife Charlotte raised ther five children on this farm. In 1878, one son, August, took possession of the land and owned it until 1901. [a,b,f p.61] |
