Became chairman of the State of Wisconsin Highway Commission in 1943. Edward Asahel Birge (1851-1950) lived here from 1925 until his death. Was a professor of Zoology at the University of Wisconsin from 1879-1925. Was the Dean of the College of Letters and Science at the UW from 1891-1925. Was acting president of the UW from 1900-1903; became president from 1918-1925.
