Winterble was an agency manager for the Bankers Life Co. and lived in this house from 1931-1934. The 1931 city directory shows Bankers Life in the Tenney Building, with Winterable’s name right above also in the Tenney Bldg. and same phone number. Isabel B. and Philip LaFollette owned the house from 1941-1947. Philip was alive until 1965, and the house is under his name in the 1946 directory. In the late 1930s this house was rented by Philip H. Gray, Jr. and his wife, Margaret, who were fictionalized in Wallace Stegner's novel "Crossing to Safety" as Sid and Charity Lang. |
