Additional Information: | This building was constructed for Charles Goette in 1868. Goette operated a grocery in this building until about 1889. After Goette, the building was used as a tailor shop, another grocery store, a book store, a dry goods store, and a restaurant. This building has historical interest as the location of a number of retail businesses. None is individually historically significant, but they contribute to the overall development of commerce in the Main Street Commercial historic district. Ornamented only by a denticulated molded and cut-brick cornice, this small two-story, three-bay commercial building was constructed for Charles Goette to house his grocery store in 1868. Plain rectangular windows are located on the upper story of the facade. The Goette building's appearance has been greatly altered by the addition of the present storefront. In addition, the building has been altered by the application of paint to the facade. A decked porch and stairway as well as several brick additions are located at the rear. The Charles Goette building is a commercial vernacular building ornamented only by a raised brick cornice. Although this building is not architecturally significant, the Goette building contributes to the historic architectural character of the Main Street Historic District. The Goette building is very similar to the adjacent buildings at 403 (65-7), 405 (65-6), 409 (65-4) and 411 (68-12) East Main Street. |
