NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Previously surveyed in 1995. The St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church’s congregation was established in 1928 on the south side of the Menomonee River as a distinctly Irish Catholic congregation, separate from the established German Catholic congregations already present in Wauwatosa. Services were initially held in a house to the south of the present St. Jude site. In 1929, the congregation constructed a school, staffed by the Sisters of St. Agnes, and an auditorium that served as St. Jude’s chapel. The church lacked funds during the 1920s and 1930s, and the auditorium would serve as the place of worship for the congregation until the church was built decades later. By 1945, the parish had grown and served over 300 families. In 1954, a Tudor Revival style rectory and convent building were constructed along North Glenview Avenue, both designed by architect Mark Pfaller. The school was expanded with an addition of more classrooms in 1955, and the chapel location was moved to a new downstairs gymnasium. A new contemporary style church, adjacent to the school, was constructed in 1957. A successful thrift shop was established 1977 by the Women of St. Jude volunteers. In 1990, an addition to the school added more classrooms, a library, and meeting areas, and in 2003, a new gymnasium and activity area were constructed.
