Additional Information: | This is the long-time location of the Watertown Daily Times, Watertown's daily newspaper of record since the early twentieth century. This building began as a one-story brick structure located here in 1916. It then had a second story attached a few years later. In November of 1953, the current building which encompasses the old structure was opened for the newspaper and they have used it ever since. The original building under this remodeling would be significant as an important location of this newspaper. Because it is hidden under the "modern" remodeling, it does not meet the criteria for significance in local history. The site, however, has some interest as the long-time location of this important newspaper. Originally a one-story, three-bay building built in 1916 at 115 West Main, the Daily Times building was enlarged by the addition of three bays on the east side (113 West Main) in 1954. At the same time the contemporary front of "Crab Orchard" was added, stone and tan brick was extended to incorporate the old building at 115 W. Main. A second story had been added to the building a few years after its initial construction in 1916. The west three bays were added within the last decade. Bands of plain rectangular windows further characterize the facade. A large flat-roofed concrete block addition has been constructed at the rear of the building. Originally a three-bay turn of the century building, the Daily Times building has been remodeled and expanded to its present contemporary appearance in 1954. The building is not architecturally significant because it is of modern-contemporary design, and less than 50 years old. As a result, this building does not contribute to the historic character of the proposed Main Street Historic District. |
