| Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. The C.J. Matteson house is a two-story Italianate style house with a hip roof covered with standing seam metal covering. The roof has wide overhanging eaves decorated with paired scroll brackets and a denticulated frieze. The clapboard walls are punctuated with symmetrical openings of two-over-two light double-hung sashes. Spanning the east elevation and wrapping around the north and south elevations is a veranda. It has a hip roof supported by narrow columns decorated with brakets. Also projecting from the house are several bays. It was the best example of the style found in the 1999-2000 survey of southwestern Monroe County. The building has all of the typical features of the style and has a high level of integrity. C.J. Matteson was one of the earliest settlers in the area and this house represents Yankee settlement in the Town of Leon. |
