NOTES
Additional Information:Description: The William Schlageter, Sr. house is formed in the gabled ell and Queen Anne styles. The structure is distinguished by chamfered corners on the lower front gable, and an open spindle porch with a balustrade and turned posts. Aluminum/vinyl siding was applied to the original wood exterior. The residence was built in 1893 by James Grief. [A]. Architectural/Engineering Significance: The William Schlageter, Sr. House is not architecturally significant because of the addition of modern aluminum/vinyl siding to the exterior. Historical Background: Originally a farmer near Meekee Post Office, William Schlageter purchased lots 8, 9, and 10 of Block 2 in the Nehs's addition by 1893 and erected his dwelling [1, 3, 5]. James Brief, a local builder and contractor, built Schlageter's house as well as The Stark and Thomas Building (WK 94/22; N88 W16733-5 Main Street) and the residence of Walter Meyer. [2, 4]. Platted in 1886, the Nehs' addition was generally settled by the more prosperous businessmen in Menomonee Falls. [4]. In 1899, Schlageter sold part of lot 9 and lot 10 to Edward Stark who then erected an adjacent dwelling (WK 91/10; N 89 W16685 Cleveland Avenue). [6]. By 1895, Schlageter moved to the village [7], but his occupation in Menomonee Falls is unknown. He was an active member of several fraternal lodges in the village [7] and died in 1947. [8]. By 1949 the house was owned by the Schick family.
