Additional Information: | House is a simple vernacular one story side gable form with a dormer reaching to 3/4 of the way to the roofline. Has three bay facade and a pent roof over front entry. Building is a T plan and is two rooms wide and three rooms deep, [the T extension is two rooms deep]. The roofline of the T extension reaches to the eaves of main block. Clad with wood clapboard and wood trim; has wide cornice board. This was the home of M.J. Hopper. It was built in 1902 for approximately $450. In this year, M.J. Hopper also owned the lot next door, lot 19, estimated to be valued at approximately $50. M.J. Hopper was listed in 1902 as molder for the Berlin Machine Works. There was an R.S. Hopper, a painter, living across the street in a Brasstown Cottage at 819 Moore St. (217/8) in the same year, and was probably related to M.J. Hopper. This house is significant under Criterion A, event, because it retains integrity in location, design, setting, workmanship, materials, feeling and association in order to convey the broad pattern of industrialization in Beloit. One aspect of this industrialization was the growing population and the need to provide affordable housing for industry workers near the factories located on the westside of the Rock River. Brasstown Cottages fulfilled this basic need, furnishing workers with single-dwelling vernacular houses on relatively spacious city lots. Moreover the Cottages' modest but distinctive profiles found in their variety of size and ornamentation conveyed a sense of individuality while at the same time being identified with the large industrial complex. Beloit's rapid growth from the 1880s to the 1920s was a direct result of this industrialization and created the cityscape of Beloit today. It was in this period of heavy industrialization and growth that most of the extant Brasstown Cottages were built. Many of the owners of Brasstown cottages were skilled workers applying their specialized knowledge to the machine-making and paper-making industries of Beloit. |
