| Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION Side gabled vernacular frame house in T plan, two rooms wide and four rooms deep featuring a central gable with decorative enclosed arched molding and full front porch. Porch is distinguished by its four turned posts and knee braces. In addition the porch exhibits two half-turned engaged posts. Has a solid rail balustrade. Porch skirting is also solid board. One addition has been added to the rear of the T extension on the north facade; part of which has been enclosed with four double hung sash windows. ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING SIGNIFICANCE House is significant under criterion C, architecture, because it is an intact example of a Brasstown Cottage and compares favorably with the houses at 103, 107, 111, and 115 Merrill Aveue, the Merrill Avenue Historic District (220/1,2,3,4,30,31). Although plain in its architectural profile, the house nonetheless displays, in its simple massing and plan, the elements of the Brasstown type--solid in wood construction, symmetrical in design, unpretentious in ornament, modest in size and rooted to its site. The city's lots tended to be long and narrow, the side gabled T plan vernacular house was well suited to these lots because the long side of the house created a sense of spaciousness while the deep lot provided room for additions. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND William Burnson moved this house from an unknown location to this site in 1920. House was valued at Apx. $1,000 at this time. {A] Sanborn maps reveal this lot was empty in 1916.
