NOTES
Additional Information:621 Thayer Street Joseph T. and Mary Langlais House
This one-and-one-half-story, frame, Second Empire house was built circa 1888 (Oneida County
tax rolls; Oneida County deeds). It was probably built by Joseph T. Langlais, for his family.
Langlais and his brother, Pascal, were partners in both a carpentry firm and a grocery, in
partnership with his brother Pascal, in Rhinelander from at least 1886 until at least 1893. The
Langlais lost the house in 1893, when it was foreclosed upon (Oneida County deeds, 21:67; and
22:182). The house is finished with square-ended, wood shingles lapped in a pattern resembling
dentils, surmounted by clapboards. There are scrolled brackets under the eaves, and two colors
of lapped shingles on the roof. The house has a polygonal, side-facade tower, and a full-facade
front porch with Doric columns. The roof has been altered with aluminum-sided, gabled
dormers. The House is an interesting and intact example of Second Empire design, and is the
only example of that style identified in the reconnaissance survey.
