NOTES
Additional Information:332 Lincoln Street Leonard and Bertha Emmerling-Bernard Froehlich House
This one-and-one-half-story frame Bungalow was built in 1917 (date spelled out in colored
pebbles in the foundation). The house has a random rubble foundation, narrow clapboards on the
first story, and wood shingles in the gable ends and on the pair of gabled dormers that site on the
front slope of the roof. The dormers also have single and paired brackets with knee braces.
There is a front-gabled, full-facade front porch with stuccoed, closed rails, stuccoed piers and
brackets with kneed braces. Other details include exposed rafters, multipaned windows, and a
polygonal side bay window. The house was built for Leonard and Bertha Emmerling. Leonard
Emmerling (1866-?) was born in Germany and immigrated to the U. S. in 1888, settling in
Rhinelander (History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas Counties, p. 252). He worked in the J. C.
Prentzlow Meat Market until circa 1903, when he opened his own meat market (Wisconsin State
Gazetteers). The Emmerlings lived in the house until at least 1930 (Rhinelander City
Directories). Bernard Froehlich was another long-time resident of the house, here from at least
1936 until at least 1965 (Rhinelander City Directories).
