Additional Information: | 432 Lincoln Street Matt Stapleton House This two-story, frame, Foursquare house has triangular dormers with bargeboards, a partially-enclosed, one-story, wrap-around porch, and has been clad with vinyl. Built circa 1900 for Matt Stapleton (City of Rhinelander tax rolls; Rhinelander telephone books), an early Rhinelander resident. Stapleton came to Rhinelander in 1883, first working as overseer of the Brown Brothers' boom operation. He later scouted timber for the lumber companies, and bought and sold real estate on his own behalf (New North, March 29, 1883; and Wisconsin State Gazetteers). Stapleton also served as postmaster from 1914 to 1920. He lived in the house until at least 1915 (Rhinelander telephone books). A later, long-time resident was Albert Broulette, a painter, here from at least 1927 until at least 1944 (Rhinelander City Directories). This is a typical local example of a Foursquare, but has been altered with the porch enclosure and vinyl siding. |
