Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 402 Dahl Street Frank and Elizabeth Kretlow House. This one-and-one-half-story cross-gabled frame vernacular house was built for Frank and Elizabeth Kretlow (City of Rhinelander tax rolls; Rhinelander telephone books). Kretlow (1873-?) was born in Lake Mills, Wisconsin. He came to Rhinelander in 1891, and went to work for pharmacist J. J. Reardon. Kretlow left Rhinelander in 1894, worked in several other communities, and returned to Rhinelander in 1901. Kretlow operated his own pharmacy in Rhinelander from 1902 until at least 1929 (History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas Counties, p. 633; Rhinelander City Directories). During the 1920s, his drug store was located in the southwest storefront of the First National Bank at 8 West Davenport Street. The house remained in the Kretlow family until at least 1965 (Rhinelander City Directories). The house has shingled, returned eaves, and a flat-roofed, enclosed, full-facade front porch. |
