NOTES
Additional Information:17-21 West Davenport Street Anthony O'Melia Building
This two-story, twentieth century commercial vernacular building was built in 1935 as a rental
property for Anthony J. O'Melia (City of Rhinelander tax rolls, Rhinelander telephone books). It
is still owned by the O'Melia family. The offices of O'Melia's law firm were (and are) located in
the building just east, 17A West Davenport Street. This building is finished with glazed cream
brick, ornamented with courses of brick soldiers above and below the second-story windows and
at the cornice, and decorated with inset diamond-shaped panels. The building has two
storefronts, the western of which appears to have housed a tavern since its completion
(Rhinelander telephone directories). Frank Langdon operated a bar in this storefront from 1936
until at least 1944; Marty's Bar was here from at least 1950 until at least 1965. The other
storefront housed Leo's Sports Shop from at least 1941 until at least 1965 (Rhinelander City
Directories).
