NOTES
Additional Information:2025: This Georgian Revival house (AHI 82628) was constructed in 1864 for Samuel Rounseville on the site of his farm and nursery. It is t-shaped in plan and is clad in synthetic clapboard with an asphalt shingled gable roof that features a dentilated cornice. A projecting central wing is front-gabled with prominent eave returns and corner boards. The front door occupies the west half of the first story, and a single double hung window with an entablatured crown and shutters occupies the east half. The front door is accented by a classically-inspired surround with a small pediment that features returned eaves and a carved sunburst; the door is flanked by multi-pane sidelights. A bank of three double hung windows is centered in the second story and features an entablatured crown and decorative shutters; these windows are further accented via fluted pilasters on each side. The remainder of the windows throughout the house are arranged singly or in pairs and have similar crowns and shutters. A two-story enclosed sun porch projects from the east end of the house. The house is separated from the street by stone walls and a decorative iron fence with vehicular-scale and pedestrian-scale iron gates, both of which are flanked by stone piers. Returned eaves; pediment with fan-carving over door. Rounseville was a nursery man. Also owned by Silas Crocker from 1878-1892; then Abner Heald from 1892-1936; then Curt Joa (and later Curt Joa Inc.) until the present. House itself dates to 1864. Current Georgian Revival-style appearance may date to circa 1940; house has been resided in synthetic clapboards. Extensive grounds include stone walls built during Abner Heald's ownership. Curt Joa was an avid horseman, and organized the "Hillcrest Town and Country Club" which held annual horse shows. Joa also built several barns on the estate. Related outbuildings include AHI#161981 (ca. 1940 garage); 161982 (1940 playhouse); 162001 (ca. 1915 stone water tower); 162021 (ca. 1940 small shed); 162022 (ca. 1940 barn); 162041 (ca. 1940 basement barn); 162042 (1955 pole barn); 162061 (ca. 1970 pole barn).
