Additional Information: | Neo-Classic revival architecture typical of commercial designs in the 1920s, particularly banks. Three bays wide; each bay defined by flat pilasters and all surmounted by a large entablature with dentils and a solid balustrade. Central bay contains the entrance with a pediment, surmounted by an arched window section on the second floor; side bays have windows on each side and identical arched openings on the second floor. This was the first mutual savings bank in Beloit, and the first bank in the United States to develop a school savings program (initiated by Sereno T. Merrill), but this is a later structure. The bank recently moved to new quarters and a restaurant which succeeded the bank was unsuccessful and closed in July, 1981. Wisconsin Registered Landmark. See WRL file. Demolished, fall, 1981. |
